Abstract
This study develops a structural-equivalent framework for various types of wavy carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a macromechanical approach. To this end, the effect of geometric waviness on the mechanical properties of CNTs is investigated through the governing equations of macromechanics. Drawing upon previous molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, an equivalent linear spring element is employed for the modeling. By examining different axial waviness configurations, a mathematical relation is established to predict the effective elastic modulus of wavy nanotubes. The results demonstrate that increasing both the wave count and wave height intensifies the reduction in the elastic modulus; conversely, the aspect ratio acts as a moderating factor, diminishing the magnitude of this effect without altering the overall trend. This coupled mechanical behavior is of paramount importance in parametric analyses, indicating that tailoring the mechanical properties of nanotubes at the macroscale necessitates the simultaneous consideration of these three geometric parameters.
